A process that places bare chips onto a printed circuit board by attaching them to a polyimide film. The film is moved to the target location, then the leads are cut and soldered to the board. The chip is then encapsulated, or “glob topped”, with expoxy or plastic.
Tool Steel
Multi-component alloys of iron, carbon (high), molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, cobalt, and tungsten. An infinite amount of combinations using these and other elements yield a wide variety of metals available to be used as tools.
Torr
The torr, or millimeter of mercury (mmHg), is a unit of pressure. It’s the atmospheric pressure that supports a column of mercury 1 millimeter high.
Total Acid Number (TAN)
The quality of base, expressed in terms of the equivalent number of milligrams of potassium hydroxide that is required to titrate the strong acid constituents present in one gram of sample (ASTM D664 or D974). This test is typically performed on products that do not contain water.
Tramp Oil
That oil which is present in a metal working fluid mix and is not from the product concentrate. The usual sources are machining tool lubrication systems and leaks.
Transistor
An electronic device capable of amplifying electronic signals similar to the vacuum tube but made from a semiconductor material, such as silicon or germanium.
